Message for U.S. Citizens - Demonstrations in Oman

As we approach the 1st anniversary of unrest and demonstrations in Oman,
the U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to review their personal plans and
remain alert to their surroundings at all times. Local press reported
several schools and public properties in the governorates of North
Batinah experienced vandalism in the past few days. Local media also
reported that increased police presence was observed in Sohar and other
areas. U.S. citizens should avoid large crowds in these areas and be
aware that unrest or spontaneous demonstrations could occur anywhere on
short notice. If caught unexpectedly near a demonstration, obey
instructions from police and leave the area as quickly as possible.
U.S. citizens should stay current on local events and be aware of their
surroundings. Consult the U.S. Department of State's Country Specific
Information on Oman as well as the Department of State's recently issued Worldwide
Caution regarding recommended security practices.
This confirms information from a discussion I had with two former students last Wednesday about their fears of returning home to Batinah and having to face problems in Sohar.
