While doing laps at the pool one morning at the staff club at the university, I witnessed an image that was so oxymoronic, that I had to stop swimming as I approached the wall of the pool's shallow end. What I saw before me was a third-world national laborer from either Bangladesh, India, or Sri Lanka with his back facing the pool as he worked. He wore the customary one-piece work jumpsuit for laborers with the name of the company, like a cattle brand, printed on the shoulder blade area. The company name read: Modern Irrigation. His task for that moment, though, was to go around to all of the poolside plants and water them with a well-used faded green plastic watering can.
